Makah, Neah Bay, Washington State, Northwest Coast 19th Century Yew wood, bone, spruce root & fibre Height: 17.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Laurent Dodier, Avranches, France. Carved from Yew wood, steamed, bent and baked with oil, the bone barb wrapped in spruce root. These large hooks were hung from the end of a stick and lowered to the sea bottom on lines made of kelp stem weighted with stone. The buoyant hooks would float up to a fixed distance from the bottom, waiting for the fish to take the hook. | |||||||||||
